The Harmon Hotel and Residences was originally designed to be a $275 million, 48-story mixed-use hotel and condominium tower. The project was part of the $8.5 billion urban mixed-use MGM development commonly known as Project CityCenter in Las Vegas, Nevada. The project was started in March 2005 and never finished. On or about July 2008, certain issues related to steel reinforcement were discovered, thereby resulting in a dispute involving the owner, contractor and subcontractors.
In April 2013, Spire was hired by Century Steel, Inc., one of the steel reinforcing subcontractors to provide opinions regarding issues related to the dispute. On June 28, 2013, Spire submitted a preliminary report of findings at the request of Hutchison & Steffen, LLC on behalf of Century Steel, Inc. in relation to the dispute between Century Steel, Inc. and Converse Professional Group (Converse).
The purpose of this report was to determine 1. if it was reasonable for Century Steel, Inc. to rely on Converse’s inspections, and 2. if Converse adhered to the standard of care required of a Special Inspector in the Las Vegas market at the time the project was being constructed.
